About Us

Nicolls FamilyIn the spring of 2002, our 2 sons, Douglas Hamilton and Cameron Thomas (at the time 2 years old and 6 months old), were diagnosed with a fatal genetic disorder called Sanfilippo syndrome or MPS III. Sanfilippo syndrome is an enzyme deficiency disorder that causes mental retardation, complete physical debilitation and death by the mid-teens.

Three months later, we learned of a risky, experimental treatment being offered at Duke University Medical Center.

This treatment would involve an intense course of chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. Stem cells, harvested from the umbilical cord blood of a healthy, unrelated delivered baby would provide a permanent source of the missing enzyme. After agonizing over the pros and cons, we packed up our precious babies and flew 2000 miles away in hopes of giving them a better life.

Ten months later our first born son died in our arms due to the complications of transplant. He was 3 years old. The anguish we live with every day is beyond words. He was an angel, given to us for just a very short time. He taught us love, compassion and the true meaning of life. He gave hope to his little brother Cameron, who survived transplant, and shows no biological signs of the disease.

While we were away, family, friends, neighbors and strangers donated money, airline miles and even had fundraisers to pay for our living expenses, which enabled us to maintain our home and financial obligations back home in Colorado. Without these generous people who reached out to us, we would have gone bankrupt and lost everything.

In 2004 we created Pennies For Nicoll Foundation. It’s our way of giving back to other families who face the same tragedy. We will never be able to repay the people who helped us, but through their giving, we have learned that God put us on this earth to help others in need. That’s why this foundation exists.

We would like to extend our appreciation to our dear friends who work passionately at making this foundation a success, and our loyal supporters who enable us to make a difference in the lives of devastated families. From the bottom of hearts, we thank you!!

In Christ,

Doug and Tracie Nicoll
